Meet the Maker: Mudpuppy Ceramic Studio

Mudpuppy Ceramic Studio

Meet Michael McDowell, the maker and owner behind Mudpuppy Ceramic Studio.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOUR CRAFT?

I’ve been making ceramics for 13 years now.

WHAT DREW YOU TO YOUR MEDIUM ORIGINALLY?

My favorite aspect of working in clay is the versatility and speed of it. I can come up with an idea and go in the studio and have a prototype mocked up in a relatively short amount of time.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST & HOW IS THAT REFLECTED IN YOUR WORK?

The amount of products available with the internet these days can be really overwhelming but I typically find if I ground myself in the unique type and quality of work that I would like to see in my own home that is the best approach. I try to refine ideas to the most optimal balance of design and utility.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ITEM TO MAKE? WHY IS IT YOUR FAVORITE?

The entire process of making is what keeps me coming back. This may sound hokey but the best feeling for me is when I am so engrossed in work and flow that I lose time and get out of my own head. It is an endorphin rush and at the end of the day I can sit and reflect on the work and gratitude for the support that allows me to live this incredible dream.

WHAT DO YOU WISH CUSTOMERS UNDERSTOOD BETTER ABOUT HANDMADE ITEMS?

The sheer amount of work and ideas that are developed from concept to completion that don’t end up being offered or make the cut. I have had an entire studios filled with work that never saw the light of day for various reasons that I am afraid to throw out because right after that is usually when I realize I could have used that idea. In the end though it all contributes to really nailed down design that can stand the test of time and make a contribution to people’s homes and environment.
